Report: North Korea appears to be preparing for a massive military parade to commemorate the new founding anniversary of its army, which falls on the eve of the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
U.S. broadcaster Voice of America reported on Wednesday that satellite pictures show a large movement of soldiers at a square near Mirim Air Base in Pyongyang.
The satellite picture provider Planet filmed the air base Tuesday morning, and found that hundreds of vehicles were parked on one side of the square and troops were seen to be moving in formation.
North Korea is forecast to be preparing for a ceremony to mark the newly designated founding anniversary of its military forces on February eighth.
Pyongyang previously celebrated the occasion on April 25th, which is when the North's founder Kim Il-sung is said to have established the predecessor to the Korean People's Army during Japan's colonial rule of Korea.
The large-scale movement was also spotted by South Korean authorities.
A South Korean government source revealed Tuesday that some 13-thousand troops and 200 pieces of equipment were mobilized near the airport for what appeared to be a military parade rehearsal.
Around 12-thousand troops and 50 pieces of equipment were spotted at the beginning of last month when the rehearsals began, but the numbers have been on the rise.
The source said the North is also expected to stage an airshow mobilizing the SU-25 war plane and the AN-2 interceptor to commemorate the day.
