South Korea won taekwondo gold and fencing silver at the Daegu Summer Universiade Friday to lead the medal standings after the second day of the world's biggest sporting event for university students.

The host country's first gold medal came in the taekwondo women's lightweight division late in the evening when Han Jin-sun beat Kimichi Darcy of the United States 3-2.

In fencing, Ha Chang-duk lost 15-11 to Xhang Liangliang of China in the final of the men's individual foil. However, the silver medal earned by Ha, the first medal won by South Korea in fencing since the 1999 Universiade, was enough to edge China out of top spot in the medal standings.
