IOC to Host Talks on N. Korea's Olympic Participation on Jan. 20

The International Olympic Committee(IOC) will hold a meeting with officials from the two Koreas next week to discuss details about the North's participation in the Winter Olympics in the South.

IOC President Thomas Bach said in a statement on Wednesday that the IOC will convene a four-party meeting next Saturday at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, with representatives from the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics organizing committee and the national Olympic committees of both South and North Korea.

The IOC said the meeting would discuss a series of “essential decisions” on the North’s participation at the games, including the number and names of athletes from the North Korean Olympic Committee as well as questions related to official protocol, including flags, ceremonies and uniform.

Bach said that he warmly welcomes the joint proposals by South and North Korea, which have been applauded by so many other governments worldwide.

North Korean IOC member Chang Ung met Bach at the IOC headquarters on Wednesday to discuss details of the North's Olympic participation before the statement was released.
