Seoul on KORUS FTA Renegotiation: 'No Deal Better Than Bad Deal'

South Korean Trade Minister Kim Hyun-chong has promised his all to draw the best results for the country in the ongoing renegotiation with the United States on their bilateral free trade pact.

Asked of Seoul’s plan during a press conference at the government complex in Sejong City on Monday, Kim said he will negotiate with the U.S. with determination that having no deal is better than a bad deal.

He was paraphrasing a similar remark by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said in a recent interview that he would rather walk away from the North American Free Trade Agreement(NAFTA) renegotiation than sign a bad deal.

Kim said he instructed members of the South Korean delegation on “a red line” that South Korea cannot back away from, emphasizing that they will not make concessions on issues that could impede the country’s technological development and have negative impact on its future generations.

South Korea and the U.S. began formal renegotiation talks on the KORUS FTA in Washington on Friday.
