Gov't to Open Public Hearing on S. Korea-China FTA

The government is seeking the public’s opinion on upcoming negotiations with China to expand their bilateral free trade agreement(FTA) to include the service and investment sectors.

A public hearing on the issue will be held on Friday at the COEX Convention Center in southern Seoul.

When the trade pact took effect in December 2015, the opening of the service and investment sectors was limited and the two sides agreed to have follow-up negotiations within two years to further open up the sectors.

Under the FTA, the two countries have taken a positive list approach on service areas, in which they only opened portions of the service areas put on the list.

Market openings for investment in nonservice areas, such as manufacturing, agriculture and mining, have been excluded from the pact until now.
