The government says a Hong Kong ship loaded refined oil products from a South Korean port and transferred the goods to a North Korean ship in international waters back in October.
A Foreign Ministry official said Friday that the Korea Customs Service came across the information when it seized and investigated the Lighthouse Winmore at the government’s request after the ship reentered the Port of Yeosu on November 24th.
The customs agency found that the ship, rented by Taiwan’s Billions Bunker Group Corporation, entered the Port of Yeosu on October eleventh and loaded refined Japanese oil products before departing for Taiwan four days later.
However, customs officials discovered that instead of heading to Taiwan, the Lighthouse Winmore transferred its oil products to four ships, including a North Korean vessel, in international waters on October 19th.
Around 600 tons of refined oil goods are estimated to have been transferred to the North Korean ship.
The ministry official said that UN Security Council sanctions ban ships from transferring any goods to and from North Korean vessels.
