A new bureau that will handle North Korea policies will be established within the Defense Ministry.
The ministry announced on Tuesday that a motion seeking revisions to the ministry’s structure was passed during a Cabinet meeting.
The revisions mainly seek to establish a bureau under the Defense Ministry that will play the role of a control tower when it comes to policies related to North Korea.
The bureau will be set up under the ministry’s Office of National Defense Policy.
The director-level position will be charged with policies on responding to Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile threats, inter-Korean military talks and building military trust.
The bureau will be in charge of four divisions -- response policies for North Korea's nuclear issue, North Korea policies, arms control, and missile and space policies.
The newly created division on response policies for North Korea’s nuclear issue will handle extended deterrence, denuclearization and nuclear armament. It will carry out operations jointly with the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s nuclear and weapons of mass destruction response center which carries out missions on tackling the North’s nuclear and missile threats.
