Avgerage Household Owes W70 Mn in Debt

South Koreans are getting deeper in debt, especially 20-somethings and teens.

Data from Statistics Korea, the Bank of Korea and the Financial Supervisory Service indicates the average South Korean household owed 70-point-two million won as of late March, up four-and-a-half percent from a year ago.

Eighteen percent of families owed debt of ten to 30 million won while 17 percent had debt smaller than ten million. More than eight percent of households owed more than 300 million won.

Households headed by people in their 40s had the largest amount of debt at an average of 85-point-three million won, closely trailed by households headed by those in their 50s.

Debt among people in their 20s and younger has surged 42 percent.
