S. Korea's Socioeconomic Costs of Diseases Increase 1.8 Times over Decade

A new study has found that South Korea's annual socioeconomic costs resulting from diseases almost doubled over the past decade.

An institute under the National Health Insurance Service(NHIS) said in its report on Monday that the country's cost of disease reached 148-point-three trillion won in 2015, up one-point-eight times from 82-point-five trillion won in 2006.

The costs increased by an annual average of six-point-eight percent.

The social and economic costs of disease include medical expenses, loss of future income from early deaths, labor and productivity losses and fees for caregivers.

Medical expenses took up 51 percent of the costs, followed by loss of future income and labor and productivity losses.

People in their 40s, 50s and 60s accounted for 56 percent of the total costs.
