FSC Head: S. Korean Considers Ban on Bitcoin Transaction

South Korean financial authorities are considering new regulations on cryptocurrency transactions, including banning them altogether.

Financial Services Commission(FSC) Chairman Choi Jong-ku told reporters Monday the commission seeks to minimize adverse effects of bitcoin transactions and discourage indiscreet speculation in digital currencies, as they boom in popularity.

Choi pointed out that virtual currency purchases are not legally viewed as financial transactions, and that dealing in cryptocurrency futures and derivatives is prohibited.
