Unification Ministry Hopes to Get N. Korea Toward Dialogue with Sanctions

The Unification Ministry says it will continue to exert efforts to peacefully resolve North Korea’s nuclear issue by getting Pyongyang to engage in dialogue through sanctions and pressure.

Ministry spokesman Baik Tae-hyun unveiled the stance on Monday when asked by reporters to comment on Seoul implementing additional independent sanctions against the North.

Asked about the effectiveness of the fresh sanctions, Baik admitted that there is a limit, noting that Seoul has for years implemented strong unilateral sanctions against the North.

However, he was quick to add that the latest sanctions are expected to boost the effectiveness of UN Security Council resolutions against Pyongyang and get countries to avoid or think twice before doing business with the North.
