UN Official Meets Russian Ambassador to N. Korea in Pyongyang

A senior UN official met with the Russian ambassador to North Korea on Wednesday to discuss humanitarian aid to the regime.

Radio Free Asia(RFA) reported on Wednesday that UN Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman met with Ambassador Alexander Matsegora at the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang.

The embassy said on its Web site that the ambassador praised the UN official for the world organization's diverse humanitarian aid programs for North Korea.

In response, Feltman expressed gratitude for the embassy's cooperation and support toward UN agencies' efforts to secure funds for their missions in the North.

The embassy said that the two sides also exchanged views on political and military situations on the Korean Peninsula, including the North's nuclear issue. The embassy added that Matsegora emphasized that the only way to resolve the North's nuclear issue is through a three step-method that it had proposed jointly with China earlier in July.

The two officials also agreed that resolving the North Korean nuclear issue through military force is unacceptable and talks for the North's denuclearization should resume soon.
