Pres. Moon Vows Cooperation for SMEs' Exports

President Moon Jae-in has vowed to actively help small-and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) engage in exports.

Speaking at a ceremony in Seoul marking the nation’s 54th Trade Day on Tuesday, Moon said the government will devise a customized system for small firms to help them with exports, assist them in securing buyers and contracts as well as delivering their goods and services.

The president said more jobs need to be created through exports before emphasizing the role of small firms which he noted make up 99 percent of total businesses and 88 percent of employment.

Moon also vowed to revamp various support systems to boost exports of service industries which have a strong effect in creating jobs.

The president cited that out of some three-and-a-half million SMEs, only about 94-thousand, or two-point-seven percent, engage in exports. He said such businesses need to grow stronger through exports and their number should expand as their growth would lead to job creation.

Moon also called for cooperation between large and small businesses and urged conglomerates to help their suppliers with exports and growth. He said the government will provide active support for such cooperation and help small firms build partnerships with leading firms abroad.
