Trade Ministry: Seoul will Protect Nat'l Interests in KORUS Renegotiation

South Korea's trade ministry says Seoul will not concede to terms that are unilateral or harmful to local industries in the renegotiation of the country's free trade agreement(FTA) with Washington.

Yoo Myung-hee, a director general at the ministry, on Wednesday spoke at a conference with representatives from the agricultural sector.

She said, "Seoul has already told the U.S. side that it will be difficult to further open up the agricultural sector due to the sensitivity of the sector and the fact that it is already highly liberalized."

Yoo added that the South Korean government has no intention of handing the agricultural sector to the U.S. on a plate, and that a possible scrapping of the deal is also an option for South Korea -- not just the U.S.
