Share of Young Workers in S. Korea's Labor Force Hits Record Low

The share of young workers in South Korea’s total labor force fell to a record low, while that of older workers hit a fresh high last month as Korean society is rapidly ageing with the birthrate remaining low.

According to data by Statistics Korea on Tuesday, the number of employed people aged between 15 and 29 totaled three-point-93 million in October, down about 52-thousand from a year earlier.

The figure has been decreasing for five straight months since June this year.

Accordingly, the share of young workers out of the overall labor force slipped to a record low 14-point-six percent last month.

In contrast, the number of employed people 60 years or older totaled four-point-39 million, up 252-thousand on year.

Older workers accounted for a record high 16-point-four percent in the country’s labor force.
