Household Debt Grew 10 Tln Won Last Month

Despite the government’s announcement of measures to curb household debt, such debt grew by ten trillion won last month, posting the sharpest surge in five months.

According to the Financial Services Commission on Wednesday, loans given out to households by banks and non-bank lenders outpaced the previous month's growth of some six trillion won.

However, compared to the same period last year, the growth had slipped.

The commission said the surge came as demand for settling payments grew during the longest-ever Chuseok holidays last month.

According to the Bank of Korea, households took out 756 trillion won in loans from banks as of the end of October, up six-point-eight trillion won from the end of September.
