Spending on Overseas Travels Record High in Q3

Overseas spending by South Korean travelers has reached a quarterly all time high.

According to Bank of Korea on Saturday, spending on regular travels in the third quarter stood at six-point-95 billion dollars for a quarterly record.

It's up nearly eleven percent from the second quarter and over five percent from the previous record set in last year's third quarter.

This payment category refers to overseas spending on accommodations and food and beverage during travels or business trips and does not include training or studies abroad.

The figure has been steadily on the rise since data began to be recorded in 1980.

The third quarter increase is due in part to the summer travel season.

According to the Korea Tourism Organization, more than seven million South Koreans went abroad during the July to September period, nearly 16 percent more than the same period last year.
