USITC Recommends 35% Tariffs to be Slapped on Solar Cell Imports

The U.S. International Trade Commission(ITC) is said to have decided to recommend President Donald Trump to apply tariffs of up to 35 percent on solar cell and panel imports from South Korea and China.

U.S. media said that the ITC reached the decision on Tuesday.

Earlier in September, two U.S. solar cell manufacturers, Suniva Inc. and SolarWorld AG, requested safeguard actions to protect U.S. industries, saying they faced blows from growing imports of solar cells.

Trump will decide on specific measures by January based on the ITC recommendations.

South Korea, China and Mexico are key exporters of solar cells to the U.S. South Korean solar cell makers, including Hanwha Q-Cells, LG Electronics and Hyundai-Green Energy, exported one-point-two billion dollars worth of solar cells to the U.S. last year.
