Amid early signs of easing tension between South Korea and China over the deployment of the U.S. THAAD antimissile system, China’s biggest online travel agency has resumed introducing trips to South Korea.
Ctrip now shows information on its Web site and mobile app about major travel destinations in South Korea as well as some cultural programs or experiences open to foreign tourists.
Specific South Korean products are still not displayed in Ctrip’s travel product category, but some observers say it will soon resume sales of travel packages to South Korea.
A travel agency in the northern Chinese province of Hebei also began offering a group tour to South Korea through its Web site on Tuesday.
It marks the first time in seven months that a Chinese agency is selling group tour packages to South Korea since travel agencies in Beijing and Shanghai halted sales in mid-March.
On Thursday, China’s Foreign Ministry also expressed hope to improve bilateral relations.
Such moves are raising speculation China may lift its economic retaliation over South Korea’s deployment of the U.S. missile defense system.
