Gov't to Turn 205,000 Nonregular Workers in Public Sector to Regular Staff by 2020

The government plans to turn 205-thousand nonregular workers in the public sector into regular staff by 2020.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor revealed the plans on Wednesday following a meeting chaired by Vice Minister Yi Sung-ki and attended by officials of the nation’s two largest trade unions and related experts.

Under the government plan, 205-thousand, or 65 percent of 316-thousand nonregular workers in the public sector, will become regular workers by 2020.

Out of that total, 74-thousand will see the switch this year.

The transition will not affect some 140-thousand people who have been hired for one-time projects, including contract-based teachers as well as employees aged 60 or over and people who are hired for certain specialties, including athletes and doctors.
