Gov't to Slash No. of Nuke Reactors to 14 by 2038

The government will accelerate efforts to slash South Korea's dependence on nuclear energy as a state-organized committee recommended earlier this week.

During a meeting presided over by President Moon Jae-in on Tuesday, the Cabinet vowed to maintain a policy initiative focused on securing more sources of renewable energy.

Under the initiative, the government plans to reduce the number of nuclear reactors from the current 24 to 14 by 2038, either by scrapping six reactors that were set to be built or by banning life span extensions on aging reactors.

However, the government will resume the stalled construction of the Shin Kori 5 and 6 reactors near Ulsan, following the state committee’s recommendation.

The government said it will also try to faithfully adopt other recommendations from the committee, such as strengthening safety standards for nuclear reactors and increasing investment in renewable energy sources.
