Reuters: Samsung, Apple Face New Damages Trial

A judge in the U.S. has ordered a new trial to determine how much Samsung Electronics should pay Apple for copying design elements of the iPhone.

Reuters said Monday that the judge issued the order ten months after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered Samsung to award 399 million dollars to Apple.

The order is seen to be a setback for Apple, which called a retrial unnecessary.

The case which began six and a half years ago initially saw jurors award Apple a payout of one-point-05 billion dollars, however this was later reduced.

Samsung said it welcomed a new trial, calling it “a historic opportunity to determine how the U.S. Supreme Court’s guidance on design patent damages will be implemented.”
