'400 Cyber Attack Attempts on S. Korean Central Bank over 4 Years'

An opposition lawmaker says that there were about 400 cyber attack attempts against the South Korean central bank over the past four years.

According to data released by Rep. Shim Jae-cheol of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party on Tuesday, the number of cyber attacks against the Bank of Korea came to 399 from 2013 to August this year.

The figure, which marked 149 in 2013, dropped to around 50 over the following three years, but surged to 116 for the first eight months of this year.

Of the 399 attacks, 273 cases were hacking attempts, and 82 percent of the attacks originated from overseas.

A government official in Seoul said that North Korea appears to have attempted cyber attacks against the central bank as means to secure foreign currency.
