BOK: Export Volume in Aug. Surged on Semiconductor and Automobile Demand

South Korea's exports continued to surge last month, fueled by demand for automobiles and memory chips.

According to the Bank of Korea's monthly index released on Monday, the volume of outbound shipments grew for the tenth consecutive month in August, amounting to 142-point-29 points, up eight-point-five percent from a year earlier.

Despite declining sales in China, due to Beijing's unofficial sanctions against the THAAD antimissile system, Korea's exports of automobiles jumped 26 percent on-year.

Shipments of semiconductors grew more than 20 percent and transport equipment by 15 percent.

The volume of imports also grew by eight-point-eight percent in August, recording 135-point-82 index points.

The central bank's index on trade volume is based on 2015.
