Foreign Minister: Provocations Will Lead to More Pressure for N. Korea

Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha has stressed that denuclearization is the only path for North Korea to have a stable and secure future.

Kang spoke at the Ministerial Meeting on the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction of the UN Security Council(UNSC) in New York on Thursday.

Kang stressed the need to make North Korea understand that its continued provocations will only lead to further isolation and stronger economic pressure. She then called for the international community’s unified and stern stance in responding to the North’s nuclear and missile provocations.

Kang stressed the need for UN members to, more than ever, fully implement UNSC resolutions, saying that such efforts will deal significant blows to the North and pressure the regime to change its course.

Kang was quick to stress, however, that sanctions are not aimed at breaking down the North but instead at getting it to come to the negotiating table to discuss denuclearization. Kang wrapped up her speech by urging the North to come to the right side of history.

Thursday’s meeting saw the attendance of representatives of UNSC members, including U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono.
