AFP: US Determined to Have UNSC Vote on N. Korea Resolution

The AFP says the U.S. is determined to put tougher sanctions on North Korea to a vote at the UN Security Council(UNSC) next Monday.

During an emergency UNSC meeting on Monday, convened in the wake of the North’s sixth nuclear test, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley declared that Washington targets to pass the new resolution to punish the North within a week.

The U.S. is circulating a draft resolution calling for an oil embargo among the UNSC members.

However, China and Russia, the other two veto-wielding permanent members of the council, are known to be opposed to portions of the draft resolution, raising doubt whether the U.S. will meet the target.

AFP quoted UN diplomats as saying that the U.S. government nonetheless launched a major push to win approval.
