US Backs Away from Threat to Pull Out of KORUS FTA

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has reportedly expressed hopes to negotiate amendments to the U.S. free trade agreement with South Korea.

Reuters reported that Lighthizer expressed such hopes on Tuesday, speaking to reporters at the close of five days of talks on the North American Free Trade Agreement(NAFTA) in Mexico City.

The comment comes after U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he would meet with his advisers this week to discuss a possible withdrawal from the U.S. free trade agreement with South Korea.

However, many U.S. congressmen voiced opposition to the withdrawal, saying that a strong alliance between Seoul and Washington has become much more important in the wake of North Korea's sixth nuclear test.

On Tuesday, the top Republicans and Democrats on the Senate finance and House ways and means committees issued a joint statement voicing their opposition to a withdrawal.

The statement read "North Korea’s latest nuclear test underscores yet again the vital importance of the strong alliance between the United States and South Korea. The U.S.-South Korea agreement, negotiated under two presidents and approved by Congress, is a central element of that alliance."
