S. Korea Reclaims No. 1 Spot in Global Ship Orders Ahead of China

South Korea has sprung back to the top spot in the monthly global ship orders ahead of China.

According to British maritime market analyst Clarksons Research on Tuesday, South Korean shipbuilders won ship orders totaling 130-thousand compensated gross tons(CGTs) last month. China came in second with 110-thousand CGTs, followed by Japan at 40-thousand CGTs.

It is uncertain, however, if South Korea will remain as the top shipbuilding contractor during the rest of the year, with its order backlog trailing those of China and Japan.

As of the end of last month, China had the biggest order backlog of 25-point-83 million CGTs, followed by Japan at 16-point-12 million CGTs, and South Korea at 16-point-one million CGTs.

CGT is a measurement of how much work is needed to build a ship.
