Gov't to Permanently Hire Contract Workers in Public Sector

Labor Minister Kim Young-joo says the government plans to turn many contract workers into regular workers beginning with public organizations.

A road map for the transition of nonregular workers into regular ones at public institutions is set to be announced next month, including a plan on how many workers at 852 public organizations will benefit from the measure.

The government also plans to create a consulting team of 500 labor experts to cope with the possible labor-management conflicts resulting from the initiative.

The ministry says widespread use of nonregular workers not only worsens job insecurity, but worsens wage inequality, can leave workers exposed to the risk of industrial hazards, and drags down the quality of the country’s social safety net.
