The number of apartments in South Korea has topped ten million for the first time since related statistics began to be compiled in 1960.
According to Statistics Korea on Thursday, the number of residences in the nation stood at 16-point-69 million as of November first, 2016. That’s up two percent from the previous year.
Out of that total, the number of detached houses slipped two-tenths of a percent to some three-point-97 million while multi-unit dwellings surged two-point-seven percent to about 12-point-52 million.
Most multi-unit residences were apartments, whose number stood at ten million-and-30-thousand. The number of apartments jumped two-point-three percent from the previous year.
The statistics agency said that apartments accounted for 60-point-one percent of all residences, up two-tenths of a percentage point. This percentage had stood at only 47-point-eight percent in 2000.
Detached houses, meanwhile, accounted for 23-point-eight percent of all dwellings, down from 37-point-two percent in 2015.
