Lawyers for Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong say they will appeal his prison sentencing on corruption charges.

The Seoul Central District Court Friday ordered Lee to serve five years in prison after he was convicted of bribery, embezzlement, illegal transfer of assets overseas, concealment of criminal proceeds and perjury. 

His lawyer Song Wu-cheol told reporters the sentence is unacceptable, and says he is certain an appellate court will overturn it and find him innocent.  

Lee's corruption convictions are closely linked to the administration of impeached former President Park Geun-hye, and many believe his fate offers hints about what the ex-president may face herself.
