Number of Foreign Tourists Drops 40% in July

The number of foreign tourists visiting South Korea has declined for a fifth consecutive month.

The Korea Tourism Organization(KTO) said Tuesday that just under one million-87-hundred tourists visited Korea in July, down more than 40 percent year-on-year.

The overall drop was led by a near 70 percent plunge in the number of Chinese tourists to just 281-thousand.

Beijing continues to ban the sale of packaged tour programs to South Korea over the deployment of the U.S. THAAD antimissile system.

The number of Japanese tourists also fell around eight percent on year to just over 17-thousand last month. Japanese visitor numbers have declined for the fourth consecutive month as North Korea's military provocations are dealing a blow to tourist sentiment.

With the exception of Vietnam, tourists from Southeast Asian nations also decreased in July compared to the same month last year.
