Exports Surge 11.6% in First 20 Days of August

The Korea Customs Service announced on Monday that South Korea’s exports amounted to 25-point-one billion U.S. dollars in the first 20 days of August. That’s up eleven-point-six percent from the same period last year.

The nation’s outbound shipments have posted continuous growth since last November and since January of this year, exports have enjoyed double-digit growth.

The daily average of exports reached one-point-seven billion dollars, up more than 19 percent from a year ago.

Such strong growth came after exports of semiconductors surged more than 42 percent, exports of oil products nearly 42 percent and exports of automobiles 21 percent.

Exports of ships and mobile communication devices, on the other hand, saw a decline.

By region, South Korea’s exports to China, the U.S., the European Union and Vietnam surged while exports to Hong Kong and the Middle East slipped.

Meanwhile, imports were tentatively estimated at 25-and-a-half billion dollars, up around eleven percent from the same period last year, resulting in a trade deficit of 400 million dollars.
