S. Korea's Youth Labor Underutilization Rate 22.6% in July

Youth unemployment in South Korea appears to have worsened this year.

According to Statistics Korea on Saturday, the country’s so-called labor underutilization indicator for young people aged between 15 and 29 marked 22-point-six percent in July.

The indicator, based on guidelines made by the International Labor Organization, reflects the number of people who are underemployed and those who currently hold part-time jobs but want full-time work. It also counts unemployed people who have given up looking for work not by choice but due to other circumstances.

The indicator for young people increased by point-six to one-point-eight percentage points on-year every month this year, except in March.

An official at Statistics Korea said that the rise in the indicator shows the employment situation for young people has worsened this year.
