Per Person Convenience Stores 1.5 Times More than Japan

The number of convenience stores in proportion to population in South Korea has surpassed Japan, a country known for its convenience store culture.

According to industry data on Tuesday, South Korea had 34-thousand-376 convenience stores as of the end of last year. With the population at over 51 million, this translates into one convenience store for every one-thousand-490 people.

This is one-point-five times higher than neighboring Japan where there is one store for every two thousand-220 people.

As of late July, the top convenience store brand in Korea was CU with eleven-thousand-949 stores nationwide, closely followed by GS25 with eleven-thousand-911. Seven Eleven trails with over 89-hundred stores followed by Ministop with 24-hundred and E-mart 24 with over 22-hundred stores.
