Gov't to Announce New Measures to Counter Housing Price Surge

The government plans to announce additional policies Wednesday to prevent the real estate market from overheating.

Among the measures reportedly under consideration are designating certain areas, including upmarket districts in southern Seoul, as areas of high speculation, and revisions to housing sale regulations.

Areas designated as being prone to speculation will be subject to more rigorous restrictions and regulations as far as property transactions are concerned.

The Korea Appraisal Board has documented a particularly rapid increase in Seoul apartment prices in recent months, rising zero-point-24 percent on average last week alone.

Chief policy-maker of the ruling Democratic Party(DP), Representative Kim Tae-nyeon, said in a meeting among the party’s floor members on Tuesday that the party will not sit idle watching a housing price surge driven by real estate speculation.

The government announced the previous antispeculation measures on June 19th, focused on lowering the loan-to-value(LTV) ratio or debt-to-income(DTI) ratio in some highly speculative regions.
