Gov’t to Comprehensively Review Introduction of Nuclear Submarine

The Defense Ministry says that it will conduct a comprehensive review on the possibility of introducing a nuclear-powered submarine to its fleet.

Ministry spokesman Moon Sang-gyun on Tuesday said that the review will assess all related factors, including international treaties, the potential impact of the move, and ways to secure nuclear fuel.

He gave the explanation in response to a request for more details about Defense Minister Song Young-moo’s recent comments on the issue.

The minister told lawmakers Monday that South Korea is ready to review the acquisition of a nuclear-powered submarine, a move that would require a revision of an atomic energy accord between South Korea and the U.S.
