Samsung Electronics Becomes World's No.1 Semiconductor Company

Samsung Electronics became the world’s number one in the semiconductor business in the second quarter after outperforming Intel which had dominated the industry for 24 years.

Intel announced on Friday that its sales for the second quarter amounted to 14-point-eight billion U.S. dollars while its operating profit stood at three-point-eight billion dollars. Compared to the same period last year, sales grew nine percent and operating profit surged 190 percent.

However, the figures were far lower than those of Samsung Electronics which were revealed earlier on Thursday.

The South Korean electronics giant posted sales of 15-point-eight billion dollars and operating profit of seven-point-two billion dollars in the second quarter.

Samsung Electronics’ ratio of operating profit to sales stood at 45-point-seven percent while that of Intel amounted to 25-point-seven percent.

Market observers said Samsung’s strong performance came as its memory chip market outgrew Intel’s central processing unit market.

Samsung Electronics is expected to outdo Intel in annual performance with ease as its performance in the computer memory chip sector is expected to further improve in the second half of the year.
