A Seoul-based nongovernmental organization(NGO) dedicated to North Korean human rights has drafted a report titled Mapping Crimes Against Humanity in North Korea.
The report released Wednesday by the Transitional Justice Working Group identifies locations of suspected mass burial sites, killing sites and possible sites containing documentary evidence linked to crimes against humanity in North Korea.
The group says it has completed the report based on two years of interviews with 375 North Korean defectors.
It said the visual maps were created using publicly available Google Earth satellite imagery.
According to the report, killing sites were identified the most as the North Korean interviewees pointed to 290 locations where people were shot across the country. Forty-seven burial and incineration sites were also confirmed.
The sites of crimes against humanity were concentrated in North Hamgyong Province which is likely because 59 percent of the North Korean defectors come from this region.
The Transitional Justice Working Group is a Seoul-based NGO founded in 2014 by human rights advocates and researchers from five countries.
