S. Korea Preps Countermeasures over Suspected Mad Cow Disease in US

South Korea's livestock authorities are working on countermeasures following reports of a suspected case of a mad cow disease in the United States.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said on Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Agriculture revealed an eleven-year-old cow tested positive for bovine spongiform encephalopathy(BSE) during a routine inspection at an Alabama livestock market.

The ministry in Seoul said there is a low possibility infected meat would be exported to South Korea, but it will strengthen inspections of U.S. beef imports and put emergency measures in place to deal with any incident.

The U.S. exports beef to South Korea through a total of 65 endorsed slaughterhouses or processing facilities, according to the ministry, but none of them are in Alabama.
