A new survey finds that it takes one year on average for young adults to land their first job amid sluggish hiring in the labor market.

According to the survey released by Statistics Korea on Wednesday, it took eleven-point-six months for 15 to 29 year olds to get employed for the first time this year. That’s up zero-point-four months from a year ago.

Amid difficulties in getting a job, around 43 percent of college students had taken temporary breaks from school for two years and three months on average, to get professional licenses or take standardized English tests for recruitment.

The statistics agency also found that a little over 54 percent of youths failed to earn one-and-a-half million won, or one-thousand 330 U.S. dollars, in monthly pay in their first job.

Thirty-seven-and-a-half percent of youths got paid between one and one-and-a-half million won in monthly pay in their first job while 29-point-six percent got monthly pay of between one-and-a-half and two million won.
