A new survey has found that this year’s summer vacation season will peak between July 29th and August fourth, as 38 percent of South Koreans plan to go on holiday during that week.
The finding was made in a phone survey of five-thousand households conducted by the Korea Transport Institute between June 22nd and 25th.
The survey shows that a daily average of four-point-83 million vacationers, or a total of 101-point-49 million, will hit the road between July 21st and August tenth. It’s up two-point-four percent from the same period last year and 24-point-nine percent from a nonvacation season.
In particular, expressways leading out of Seoul and the capital area are predicted to be the busiest on July 29th with departing vacationers. They will likely be most clogged with homeward-bound travelers on August first.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced Tuesday special measures to help ease traffic congestion during the vacation season, including increases in public transportation operations. The ministry will also run a special summer vacation traffic management period from July 21st to August tenth.
