The number of electric cars registered in South Korea has surpassed 15-thousand.
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on Thursday, the number of electric vehicles registered in the nation stood at 15-thousand-869 in the first half of the year. That’s 35 times larger compared to the first half of 2012.
Around half of the electric cars are registered in Jeju Island. Seoul has the second highest number of electric cars followed by Gyeonggi Province, Daegu, South Gyeongsang Province, South Jeolla Province and Busan City.
Nearly three-thousand people are found to have electric vehicles in addition to another vehicle.
The government is aiming to increase annual sales of electric cars and other eco-friendly vehicles to 480-thousand units by 2020, which is about 30 percent of all new cars. Starting from September, the government will discount highway tolls for electric and hydrogen-powered cars.
