Gov’t to Ease Sale Ban on Live Chickens

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will ease a ban on the sale of live chickens at traditional outdoor markets and restaurants.

The ministry said on Monday that it will restrictively allow the sale of live chickens, as no new cases of avian influenza(AI) has been reported since June 19th and the AI virus’ latent period of 21 days has passed. But the sale will resume with tougher quarantine measures in place to prevent a recurrence of the disease.

Live chickens from ten cities and provinces that were not hit by bird flu can be distributed across the nation. However, live chickens from seven AI-stricken cities and provinces will be sold only within those areas and banned from being moved to uninfected regions.

The government placed the sale ban in early June amid a recurring spread of bird flu.
