S. Korea to Build World’s Largest Floating Solar Power Plants

The world' largest floating solar power plants will be built in South Korea in about two years.

The Korea Rural Community Corporation on Friday announced the plan to build the facilities in Lake Seongmun, Daeho and Goheung in South Chungcheong and South Jeolla provinces.

The agricultural infrastructure management agency said that a total of 280 megawatts of electricity will be produced by the solar panels in the three man-made lakes when they are completed in 2019 as planned.

The largest floating solar power plant is currently located in Huainan City, China, generating about 40 megawatts of electricity.

The corporation expects that the project will help decrease greenhouse gases by 160-thousand tons annually, an amount equivalent to a reduction achieved by one-point-18 million pine trees.

The South Korean government is planning to increase the use of renewable energy resources to 20 percent by 2030.
