Umbrella Labor Union KCTU Holds General Strike

South Korea’s umbrella labor union, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU), held a general strike in Seoul on Friday.

The group says about 50-thousand members attended the event at Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul.

They demanded an increase in the legally mandated minimum wage to ten-thousand won, the abolition of so-called nonregular workers who are hired only part time,  and better working conditions for laborers in general.

The KCTU said the latest general strike was, for the first time in its history, led by nonregular workers, including those at school, university, hospital and construction sites.
