South Korea’s second-largest umbrella union has declared it will stage a large-scale general strike on Friday.
The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU) announced Wednesday that it plans to hold a so-called social general strike at 3 p.m. Friday at Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul.
The KCTU’s demands include increasing the minimum wage to ten-thousand won, abolishing nonregular workers, while also granting nonregular workers rights to union activity.
It is expected that as many as 40-thousand will participate in the action, including irregular workers at schools and local governments.
Choi Jong-jin, the KCTU's acting chief, said they are calling it a "social strike" because it is not about collapsed wage negotiations, but about making demands for basic entitlements such as minimum wage and labor rights for nonregular workers.
