South Korea has again seen a two-digit drop in the number of newborns.
According to a population report by Statistics Korea on Wednesday, the number of newborns stood at 30-thousand-400 in April, down 13-point-six percent from a year earlier and continuing a two-digit fall for the fifth consecutive month since December last year.
The number of births has been falling for 17 straight months since December 2015.
Approximately 129-thousand-200 babies were born in South Korea between January and April this year, a 12-point-six percent drop from the same period last year.
The statistics agency said that the prolonged steep decrease in births poses a serious problem.
The number of marriages also declined eleven-point-eight percent year-on-year to 20-thousand-100 in April. The number of divorces also dropped four-point-eight percent to seven-thousand-900 during the same period.
