S. Korea's Imports of US Beef Increase

South Korea’s imports of U.S. beef are growing, while Australian beef imports decreased this year.

According to data from Korea Customs Service released on Monday, South Korea imported a total of 63-thousand tons of American beef from January to May, up seven-and-a-half percent on-year.

However, imports of Australian beef decreased by point-two percent over the period to about 80-thousand-700 tons.

Australian beef imports are still larger in the cumulative figure, but are decreasing unlike the imports of American beef.

South Korea’s overall beef imports reached 170-thousand tons during the first five months of the year, up about eight percent on-year.

An industry official said that American beef better suits South Koreans’ tastes as it has more marbling like Korean beef.
