A local web hosting company has been infected by ransomware, a type of malicious software that prevents or limits users from accessing their system.

According to the security industry on Saturday, part of the company’s web hosting server came under attack by a ransomware called Erebus at 1 a.m. Saturday.

Thousands of web sites connected to the server were reportedly infected or affected by the attack.

Erebus utilizes a technique to bypass User Account Control to infiltrate the user’s system and ask for a ransom.
